Drawing in the Dark: Exploring Charcoal & Light Beginner 13 - 18 yrs

 1.5 to 2 hrs 2 Sessions $35 per Participant

Get to know charcoal as a powerful tool for drawing with depth and drama in this relaxed, beginner-friendly class for teens. In a supportive setting, students will explore how light and shadow work together to create mood, volume, and form. Teens will dive into the bold and expressive world of charcoal drawing, learning how to use this classic medium to create striking, lifelike artwork. Focusing on the fundamentals of light and shadow, students will discover how to turn flat shapes into 3D forms using contrast, shading, and texture.

Through a mix of guided exercises, students will learn to see like artists—observing highlights, shadows, and subtle shifts in value. They’ll experiment with classic charcoal techniques like blending, smudging, lifting, and layering, to build realistic depth and volume.

By the end of the class, students will complete a finished charcoal piece that celebrates their growing skills and unique perspective to bring a subject to life using dramatic light and deep shadow.

All Materials will be supplied.

We’ll be working with some messy (and fun!) materials, so we recommend wearing clothes you don’t mind getting a little creative with. Smocks or aprons are totally optional—but they can be a great extra layer if you’d like!
