The Alchemy of Print: DIY Gelli Plates & Experimental Monoprinting 12 to 18 yrs
1.5 to 3 hrs 2 sessions
Discover the fascinating chemistry behind one of the most playful and versatile tools in contemporary printmaking — the Gelli plate. In this hands-on, art-meets-science workshop, students will dive into the curious world of gels, polymers, and physical chemistry while crafting their own DIY gelatin-based printing plates from simple kitchen ingredients.
We’ll break down how gelatin, glycerin, and water interact on a molecular level to create a flexible, reusable, and wonderfully squishy surface perfect for capturing layered prints. Alongside this science exploration, students will experiment with the art of monoprinting — pulling one-of-a-kind prints using vibrant paints, stencils, natural textures, and everyday found objects.
This class is perfect for curious artists, makers, tinkerers, and students who love hands-on discovery. No printmaking or chemistry background needed — just a playful spirit and a sense of adventure.
Includes: All materials for plate-making and printing, plus a take-home info sheet on the science behind your new favorite art tool.
We’ll be working with some messy (and fun!) materials, so we recommend wearing clothes you don’t mind getting a little creative with. Smocks or aprons are totally optional—but they can be a great extra layer if you’d like!
